MAYO THOMPSON & THE CORKY BAND
SIR RICHARD BISHOP

ZEBULON

Iconoclastic artist Mayo Thompson – the sole constant of The Red Krayola – comes to Zebulon to revisit the idiosyncratic repertoire of his only solo LP, 1970’s Corky's Debt to His Father. Largely forgotten after it’s initial release on the short-lived Texas Revolution label, the album was reissued by Drag City in 1994, becoming a landmark that sits at the confluence of several strains of American music – singer-songwriter folk, psych, blues, rock – and fits squarely in none.

This material had scarcely been played live since it was made in the humid air of Houston, just after The Red Krayola’s first flurry of late-sixties activities. Thankfully Thompson left the door open, and in 2019 convened “The Corky Band” – a group that deftly channels the tunes’ vitality, energizing its leader to find fresh expression in the songs, and even space for new lyrical flourishes.

Come dig the gig.

“Coming as the sun set on the first psychedelic rock era, ‘Corky's Debt’ evokes the early days of acoustic blues, but is already in the maelstrom from which punk rock would emerge just a few years later.” - Drag City

“One of the great American music solo albums.” - Forced Exposure

The Corky Band:
Lina Tullgren - Keys/Violin
Tom Watson - Guitar
Doug Tuttle - Bass
Yahya Alkhansa - Drums
Salmak Khaledi - Trombone/aux percussion

Dream show begins with a special performance by Sir Richard Bishop – one of the architects of the prankster carnival that was Sun City Girls – plying his trade as six-string purveyor of esoterica, rags, and ragas.
