On March 13th, Nadah El Shazly – vocalist, producer, and sound artist from Cairo, Egypt – makes her Los Angeles debut. L.A. based producer and performer Maral opens the show, and your sound selectors for the evening are Arshia Haq and Jeremy Loudenback of Discostan.

A central figure in Cairo’s new wave of experimental music, Nadah El Shazly unfurls a fantastic, psychedelic, and cinematic world of sound, drawing inspiration from an array of forms: futuristic Arabic music of the early 20th century, free jazz, contemporary classical, and electronic pop idioms.

Her hypnotic voice is the through-line on her acclaimed 2017 debut album Ahwar, a collection of dreamstate tracks written and produced by El Shazly, in in collaboration with like-minded Egyptian musicians Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi (of Dwarfs of East Agouza.)

Compelling in live settings, El Shazly has performed across Europe, Canada, and the Middle East. She visits L.A. for the first time to share what’s new, celebrating the release of the soundtrack for Les Damnés Ne Pleurent Pas. She will be joined by Montreal-based harpist Sarah Pagé.
L.A. based producer and performer Maral pulls the fabric of Persian sonics into a mix of crunchy beats and groovy dub, a wondrous place found not too far from Muslimgauze on any heads’ psychogeographic map. Of late, she has been mixing it up from set to set, folding in brand new tracks, and taking live setar excursions.

Your sound selectors for the evening are Arshia Haq and Jeremy Loudenback of Discostan, imaginative DJs who pull from a vast archive of musics from South and West Asia and North Africa regions (and diaspora)  –  from the golden-age to the most forward-thinking musical producers of this very moment.
