TWIG HARPER
SYKO FRIEND GUITAR SET
ZEBULON
A tour-ending, home-coming gig as system trickster Twig Harper completes a five week, 35 date, transcontinental, solo-driving ground tour at Zebulon with a FREE show. Syko Friend opens with a special guitar-based set. Come on time, get drenched.
The electronic underground is alive. Fans nationwide report Twig blowing bits via midi trumpet (!?) but apparently air is just the starting point of a data and signal chain that can go off the rails… What could go right?
JAMES TWIG HARPER JOHNSTON
AN EVENING WITH TWIG HARPER
Live sets in Jimmy Harper's world right now: How do you improvise with yourself? A system that takes what he gives it, and in return it guides the live operator on a middle road of control & chaos. Material is processed in a way that T. Harp understands, but since it is inherently designed to be a chaotic system James cannot control how the output is articulated. This nonlinear generative system is a live, unrepeatable happening. A virtual modular system of chained random generator modules, clocked, with a master logic behind it, issuing at random times. Moments of time move forward, back, from side to side, diagonally. A breakdown approach to recognizability.
Tweg, on this happening: “Me, my system, the output – the holy trinity. Since the pandemic started, I went from using physical objects to computer systems that could be trained. My whole MO has always been: How do I hack something to find the hidden system. The shift in thinking was: focus more on the compositional techniques so the effect of the chaos is more evident. Highlight the system – now, it's not so much about the larger pieces of recognizable music. It's about Irreproducible Activity, the nervous system getting blasted to another dimension. The experience of being thrown into a world where you don’t understand its logic.
Chaos is something baked in: a component. A feature, not a bug, and the antidote for the linear empire of infinite growth. The trickster module. To open up the portal. Y0u think everything is this, laws & regulations, but there are moments that open up and break down.“
