CATERINA BARBIERI
POD BLOTZCARLO MARIA
LODGE ROOM

Known for energetic live performances on modular synthesizers, Caterina Barbieri is a Milan-based composer and performer who plays with permutations of polyphony and polyrhythm. Often riffing on repetition, Barbieri’s minimalisms also play with perception itself, tapping the potential of sequencers to explore the psycho-acoustic and psycho-physical effects of sound. Indeed, with her 2019 LP on Editions Mego “Ecstatic Computation” Barbieri seeks to turn computation “…from being a formal, automatic writing technique into a creative, psychedelic practice to generate temporal hallucinations.” This – her first appearance in Los Angeles – will include a mixed media collaboration with sculptor Jacopo Mazzetti.

Pod Blotz is a futuristic audiovisual expression guided by Suzy Poling. A perennial figure in key corners of the American underground thus far into the 21st century, Poling has evolved a fantastical live show – noisy missives and haunting vocals laid atop industrial pulse and decay, framed by the artist’s own abstract, metallic, and idiosyncratic video. The latest Pod Blotz album Transdimensional System – released on Dias Records – follows a series of outings on the Nostilevo and Difficult Interactions labels.

Drawing from minimalism as much as from club musics, Italian composer and performer Carlo Maria creates electronic sound that is itself inspired by the feedback loop between humans and machines in the music-making process. Working with classic hardware and contemporary software alike, Maria focuses on the subtle, shifting changes within repetition to unfold “the spectral complexity wrapped in a single pattern.” This is his first performance in Los Angeles.
